Objectives: To determine the intra and interrater reliability of the Spinalmouse® for measuring range of motion of each vertebral joint between T1-T2 to L5-S1 from extension to flexion.
Background Data: Poorly described studies have evaluated the reliability of this cheap and non-invasive device for measuring spinal range of motion. Pilot studies have however suggested that the device is not reliable enough for research purposes when measuring intervertabral range of motion.
Methods: A convenience sampling method recruited 5 healthy subjects and 5 examiners with at least 4 years of experience in manual care calibrated. Each rater measured each subject 5 times. 2’125 measurements were analyzed. Examiners where blinded to results. Data was extracted from the Spinalmouse® software and imported in SPSS 10.0. ICC (3,1) was used to calculate intrarater reliability and ICC (2,1) for interrater reliability.
Results: Intrarater reliability was 0.75 for 4 of the 85 (4.7%) ICC calculated (17 joints and 5 raters) showing insufficient reliability for clinical use in the conditions of observation for most examiners and levels. Between rater reliability was bellow clinical needs (ICC0.75) for all seventeen intervertabral segments.
Conclusions: Results of this study do not justify the use of SpinalMouse® to assess intervertabral range of motion.
