Research as to the added value of a set of osteopathic techniques on patients with non-specific low back pain with the emphasis on the portocaval system, the diaphragm and the Iliopsoas muscle: a randomized controlled clinical trial.
Abstract
BACKGROUND: A majority of patients who visit osteopathic physicians seek treatment for low back pain (LBP). Most studies concerning the treatment of chronic non-specific LBP target the mechanical aspect of the lumbar region. However an osteopathic treatment consists of three aspects: structural, visceral and cranial.
OBJECTIVE: Research the effect of a set of osteopathic techniques on patients with non-specific chronic LBP with the emphasis on the portocaval system, the diaphragm and the Iliopsoas muscle. METHOD: Patients with non-specific chronic LBP were selected to participate in a randomized controlled clinical trial. The control group received the conventional intervention. The experimental group underwent a set of osteopathic techniques with the emphasis on the portocaval system, the diaphragm and the Iliopsoas muscle in addition to conventional treatment. The Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and the Quebec Back Pain Disability Scale (QBPDS) were used to evaluate the effect.
RESULTS:At intake the experimental and control group (n=30) showed no preliminary differences. The QBPDS for the control and experimental group after the intervention had no significant difference (t-test: p >0,05), however the improvement in QBPDS was significant (t-test: p
