Abstract
Background: The diaphragm is a musculotendinous sheet separating the thoracic and abdominal cavities taking part in ventilation, expulsions, visceral mobility, venous and lymphatic drainage, supporting the spine in activities, and in displays of emotion. This project aimed to add to the limited research available from an Osteopathic perspective and highlight the diaphragms’ value for all systems within the body. Research questions: What is the perceived importance of the diaphragm in relation to body systems amongst UK Osteopaths? i) Do Osteopaths think there are any predisposing factors to diaphragm dysfunction? And does diaphragm dysfunction predispose the patient to other systemic disorders? ii) How does diaphragm dysfunction present to the Osteopath? iii) What Osteopathic techniques are most often used in the treatment of the diaphragm? iv) Which of these is considered to be the most effective? Method: A web-based questionnaire was used to survey Osteopathic approaches to the diaphragm, with recipients chosen through location-based stratified sampling. Results: The results indicate that the majority of UK Osteopaths understand the importance of the diaphragm in relation to different body systems. Over 75% of all Osteopaths believe smoking, obesity, posture, age and psychological state to have a negative effect on the function of the diaphragm. Common symptoms were gastro-intestinal, ventilatory and mechanical, with significant findings (p
