Abstract
Background: In medical or therapeutic practice, an understanding of a patient’s expectations and experiences is an important part of successful patient treatment and management. In the care of paediatric patients the presence of a parent adds another dimension to the already complex interplay between expectations, experiences, outcomes and patient satisfaction. Complementary medicine includes all such practices and ideas which exist outside the domain of conventional medicine. For the purposes of this study acupuncture, aromatherapy, chiropractic, homeopathy and osteopathy only were considered, Objective: The aims of this review were to; investigate the range of expectations and experiences of parents whose children have received Complementary or alternative Medicine (CAM); consider any correlation between demographics and parents’ expectations and experiences; ascertain if parents’ expectations are influenced by the evidence base for the efficacy of CAM therapies; understand this in the context of an increasing utilisation of CAMs in the paediatric population. Methods: Reproducible literature searches of online databases and journals and hand searches of relevant journals together produced articles for consideration. Results: Using Greenhalgh. (1997) and the Critical appraisal skills programme, 28 articles were identified for review. Themes identified were parental expectations, experiences, the influence of evidence and perceived efficacy, utilisations and the influence of demographics, Conclusion: Cam utilisation in the paediatric population is increasing and is particularly high in patients with chronic conditions. Previous parental use of CAM is the only demographic shown to significantly increase the likelihood of a child receiving CAM. Further research is required to understand the impact of efficacy and evidence on parent choice and also to fully appreciate the impact on parental expectations on CAM outcomes.
