Abstract
There has been interest within osteopathy in the practitioner's intent during the treatment of patients. The strength of intent may make patients more aware of themselves and may reduce their anxiety levels. The aim of this study was to measure this effect on anxiety levels and proprioceptive awareness.A between groups design was used with a pre- and post-intervention score using a questionnaire (State Trait Anxiety Index S.T.A.I.) and a proprioceptive relocation test for spatial awareness.Subjects were British School of Osteopathy students (N=63) between 20 and 40 years with no history of sensory disturbances or dysfunction in the hands, knee or lower limb and no proprioceptive dysfunction such as vertigo or dizziness. The subjects were allocated to three groups were:No touch controlTouch with no intention control Touch with intention by the researcher towards the structural and physiological elements of proprioceptive control. There was an intervention time of five minutes whilst the subjects were resting supine. There were no significant differences between the groups for either change in anxiety or spatial ability. The hypothesis that the thoughts or intentions of the researcher can alter anxiety or spatial awareness is not supported.
