Abstract
This study describes the incidence and distribution of musculoskeletal disorders occurring in UK dentists and investigates the relationship between these symptoms and work practices. One hundred members of the United Kingdom Dental Association were randomly selected and sent questionnaires of which 60 responded. All of those surveyed had to have been qualified a minimum of ten years.Sixty percent of the respondents claimed that they suffered musculoskeletal pain with the vast majority of these putting their disability down to their occupation. The overwhelming nature of the symptoms were lumbosacral and cervico-thoracic pain, the nature of which took the form of a dull ache.No significant correlation's were made between number of years in practice, type of pain, number of patients seen or methods of working .However, it is hypothesised that poor ergonomics within the dental operating theatre and inconveniences in the physical work environment together with the strain of work are systematically related to self -reported musculoskeletal disorders. The results support the findings of previous international studies.
