TITLE: The added value of a set of osteopathic techniques in subjects with allergic rhinitis (AR). RESEARCH TITLE: Research into the added value of a set of osteopathic techniques on the quality of life in subjects with persistent moderate/severe complaints of AR: A single-blind randomized controlled clinical trial. BACKGROUND: AR has a high prevalence in world population, but limited research has been found about the osteopathic approach to this problem. Moderate/severe persistent AR causes an imbalance in the autonomic nervous system and thereby causes symptoms and influences the quality of life. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the added effect of a set of osteopathic techniques on the quality of life (MiniRQLQ) and symptoms (VAS and PNIF) in subjects with persistent moderate/severe complaints of AR. METHODS: AR patients were randomly divided to an experimental and a control group. The experimental group received fourteen osteopathic techniques in addition to conventional treatment. RESULTS: Thirty-nine subjects were included: experimental (n=20, 45.5 ±11.9 years of age) and a control group (n=19, 40.5 ±13.1 years of age). After six weeks, non-significant differences in quality of life (ANCOVA: p=0.40) and symptoms (PNIF: ANCOVA: p=0.16; nasal congestion VAS: ANCOVA: p=0.60; runny nose VAS: ANCOVA: p=0.24; nasal pruritus VAS: ANCOVA: p=0.48; sneezing VAS: ANCOVA: p=0.87; watery eyes VAS: ANCOVA: p=0.11; stinging eyes VAS: ANCOVA p=0, 46; itching palate VAS: ANCOVA p=0.61; coughing VAS H: ANCOVA: p=0.29) were found between the two groups. DISCUSSION: A larger population is needed to draw accurate conclusions. CONCLUSION: The selected osteopathic techniques applied during a timeframe of 6 weeks, showed no significant added effect on the quality of life and symptoms in subjects with AR compared to controls. More research is needed to draw accurate conclusions.
