Abstract
ObjectiveTo investigate the possible long-term effects of a visceral manipulation over the sigmoid colon area building upon the evidence yielded by previous researchers. DesignTen subjects were recruited, following screening for eligibility, among students in the first or second year cohort of BCOM. The subjects were exposed in randomised order to a visceral mobilisation, a sham intervention and control group. Pain pressure thresholds were measured from an experimental site and a control site via hand-held pressure algometry before, immediately after and 24h after the different interventions. A two-way repeated measures ANOVA study was performed to assess possible interactions of pain pressure thresholds at the various levels of time and intervention. ResultsDue to non attendance two subjects were excluded entirely from the study and three more subjects were excluded only from the 24-hour session of the control intervention for the same reason. No statistically significant changes in pain pressure threshold changes were found comparing before, immediately after and 24-hour after a visceral mobilisation compared to a sham and a control intervention (P>0.05). ConclusionsNo significant changes in pain pressure thresholds following a visceral manipulation over the sigmoid colon area were found in the present study. Limits and suggestions are discussed in relation to the present and future research.
