Abstract
IntroductionJoint hypermobility is a common musculoskeletal condition that is often not managed properly. One of the principals in the management of hypermobility is strengthening of muscles to support the joints better. This is a prospective, comparative, cohort pilot study investigating whether there is a difference in muscle strength between hypermobile subjects and non hypermobile subjects. Method9 hypermobile and 8 non hypermobile female subjects were chosen from the British College of Osteopathic Medicine. Each subject was asked to perform knee flexion and extension on the isokinectic dynamometer (model Cybex 770).  3 different speeds were set on isokinetic dynamometer, 60 meters/sec, 180 meters/sec and 240 meters/sec. Each subject was asked to participate in a trial run at the different speeds before the actual test. Each trial run included 5 repetitions of flexion and extension whilst the actual test included 10 repetitions. After each cycle there was a 30 second break to allow the muscles to recover. Subjects were tested bilaterally. ResultsThe muscle strength was not significantly different between hypermobile subjects and non hypermobile group. DiscussionThe results of this pilot study does not show a difference in muscle strength between hypermobile and non hypermobile subjects thus asking the question whether treating hypermobility with muscle strengthening is needed. However, this is the first study looking at the differences in muscle strength between hypermobile and non hypermobile group and therefore further research is needed before a definitive conclusion can be made.
