Abstract
ObjectivesThe aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of an isolated short-duration progressive muscle relaxation technique on pressure pain threshold of both the dominant and non-dominant sides of the trapezius muscle. Design15 healthy, asymptomatic male subjects (mean age = 27 years, SD = ± 7.01) participated in a single-blinded, randomised, controlled, cross-over design. Subjects were randomly assigned to either control, sham or progressive muscle relaxation and with a wash-out period of 1 week, participated in each group. Pressure-pain threshold values of pre-located tender points within both dominant and non-dominant sides of the trapezius muscle were obtained using a hand-held digital algometer both before and immediately after each intervention. A two way repeated measures ANOVA was used for statisticalanalysis with significance set at p < 0.05. ResultsA two-way repeated measures ANOVA revealed an increase of + 0.9 kg/cm2 of the dominant side in the progressive muscle relaxation group postintervention although this was not found to be statistically significant (p = 0.143). The sham group results remained constant whilst there was a very slight decrease of - 0.2kg/cm2 in the control group, again showing no statistical significance. Pressure pain threshold of the non-dominant side also showed no statistical significance between groups (p = 0.250). There was found to be no change in PPT values of the control group, whilst both sham and progressive muscle relaxation intervention revealed a negligible change of + 0.1kg/cm2. ConclusionAn isolated short-duration progressive muscle relaxation technique was not found to be effective in significantly reducing pressure pain perception of either dominant or non-dominant sides of the trapezius muscle in healthy male subjects. Further investigations are necessitated to establish the potential efficacy of a longer-duration isolated progressive muscle relaxation intervention and the potential supremacy of either audiotape or investigator led direction of the technique.
