- BackgroundPatient expectation is a valuable area of research within osteopathy. By acknowledging an individual’s expectation of their care, and understanding the development of that expectation, the practitioner is better able to provide optimal care to meet the needs of the patient and increase patient satisfaction. ObjectivesThis study aims to analyse patient expectation and satisfaction within the British College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM) in order to measure the extent to which BCOM are meeting the needs of the patients currently attending treatment, and whether a patient’s satisfaction tends to be linked to his or her expectations. MethodsThe study was a qualitative questionnaire based randomized controlled trail. The questionnaire had two main sections that were answered on a Likert scale and covered aspects of patient exception and treatment outcome as well as patient satisfaction. The areas of questioning corresponded to information provided to the patient during their first consultation. The participants consisted of patients who were private and new to the BCOM clinic.Results: Results pointed to an overall high level of patient expectation, as well as high outcomes and satisfaction levels. They further indicated that – in some cases – a patient’s level of expectation can reliably be used to predict his or her level of post-treatment satisfaction, to a 95% statistical significance. ConclusionThe results established that the overall level of post-treatment satisfaction was high, thereby indicating that BCOM practitioners are supplying an adequate level of information to meet new patient expectations. And given the link between expectation and satisfaction, the study illustrates that Patient-centered expectation research is a valuable area of focus for osteopathic practitioners.
