Abstract
ObjectivesTo identify any differences in the short and long-term effects of a four-week stretching regime of static-passive and dynamic-active stretching of the triceps surae muscle group (TSMG) on active ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (AADFROM) in healthy male participants. Methods23 participants [25 ± 4 (mean age ± SD)] completed a randomised, single-blinded non-cross over control trial. After being screened for suitability, participants were randomly assigned to either; static-passive stretch group, dynamic-active stretch group or control group. For four-weeks, participants carried out their stretches and changes in AADFROM were monitored using a universal goniometer (UG) at baseline (W0), week-two (W2), week-four (W4) and at week-six (W6), in both ankles. A two-way repeated measures ANOVA was conducted to determine AADFROM changes between groups. Statistical significance was set at 0.05. ResultsOnly the dynamic-active group demonstrated significant increases in AADFROM at W2 in participants’ right ankles (p=0.003). By W4, AADFROM only increased significantly from W0 in the static-passive and dynamic-active groups in participants’ right ankles (p<0.001 & p<0.001) and left ankles (p=0.006 & p<0.001), with the dynamic-active group demonstrating the greatest significant difference between groups. By W6, such significant increases between stretching groups were not statistically significantly different. ConclusionDynamic-active stretching of the TSMG caused the quickest significant increase in AADFROM in participants’ right ankles, and the most significant increase in AADFROM across both ankles between groups at W4. It proved effective at sustaining significant increases in AADFROM, however such sustained increases were not statistically significantly different from static-passive group. Further investigation into the effects of such stretches should be performed in symptomatic participants.
