Abstract
AimTo measure the effects of acupuncture and thoracic high-velocity low-amplitude thrust (HVLAT) technique on the peripheral sympathetic nervous system by measuring changes in cutaneous blood flow in the upper limbs, to determine the synergistic effect of combination treatment. MethodThirteen asymptomatic male subjects volunteered to participate in a randomised controlled crossover study. Subjects were screened for suitability and were randomly assigned to either; HVLAT, acupuncture treatment, both or control. All subjects were randomly assigned to each treatment modality with a one week wash out in between. Blood perfusion unit measurements were taken for 2 minutes before and 2 minutes after intervention, using Laser Doppler Flowmetry, with the probes attached on the dorsum of both hands between the second and third metacarpals. A two way repeated measure ANOVA was conducted to determine cutaneous blood flow changes between the groups. Statistical significance was set at 0.05. ResultsThere was no statistical significant difference between treatment and time (p=0.143). There was no statistical significant difference between blood perfusion unit differences (p=0.440). There was a trend of decrease of cutaneous blood flow after HVLAT and together with acupuncture intervention. ConclusionAcupuncture appears to have a potential in creating a synergistic effect with osteopathic treatment modality. Further investigation into the long term effects of acupuncture and osteopathic techniques in symptomatic subjects is needed.
