Abstract
IntroductionKinesiology tape is becoming increasingly popular among the sporting communities. It is believed that kinesiology tape can support athletes when injured, improve performance and decrease risk of injury. This before and after study investigated whether Kinesiology tape application can increase flexibility in the hamstring muscle group. MethodsThe current study employed a cross over design, before and after study on fourteen healthy University students (9 male, 5 female). Each participant was asked to complete both control (no tape) and intervention (Kinesiology tape) in randomised order. The Kinesiology tape was worn for two days and was re-measured two days after. There was a five day was out period between testing. Participants were asked to continue normal daily activities. The angle of the knee on the dominant leg was measured during active knee extension. Statistical evaluation involved a Two Way Repeated Measures ANOVA. ResultsKinesiology tape had no statistical significant difference pre and post Kinesiology tape after wearing the tape for two days (p=0.053). ConclusionThe results of this study do not support the claims that Kinesiology tape increases flexibility in the hamstrings. However there is still very little research in this area and further research is required to produce a definitive conclusion.
