Abstract
IntroductionE-learning may be defined as the act of learning through use of electronic means. M-learning is a type of E-learning that has been defined as any type of learning that takes place in learning environments and spaces that takes account of the mobility of technology, mobility of learners and mobility of learning. An increasing trend in mobile device (MD) ownership, may be among the factors influencing a number higher education institutions (HEI) to adopt bring your own device policies (BYOD) whereby students are encouraged to bring MDs to HEI. AimsFirstly to investigate the feasibility of BYOD strategies at Osteopathic Educational Institutions (OEIs) and secondly to investigate perceptions of M-learning and E-learning resources amongst osteopathic students. MethodsAn online questionnaire was sent to students studying at four OEIs. ResultsOwnership of mobile technology was high, with 100% of students reporting owning one more devices. While students frequently reported bringing smartphones and tablets to OEI, laptops were less frequently brought to OEI. Overall students demonstrated positive perception of M-learning with most students (87.1%) agreeing that MDs enable them to access information quickly. Students reported the following e-resources to be most important to their academic success; online journal databases, freely available online resources, the Intranet and educational videos. ConclusionThis research indicates feasibility in implementing BYOD teaching strategies at OEI. Overall Students at OEIs demonstrate positive perception of M-learning and report E-learning resources to be of importance to their academic success.
