Abstract
This study investigates whether there is any change in levels of body image dissatisfaction, and judgements of healthy size over the 4 years of osteopathic education. It compares 1st (n=59) and 4th (n=78) year osteopathic students; and compares all the osteopathic students (n=137) with a group of non osteopathic students (n=30).The study uses a standardised set of 9 silhouette diagrams in female and male form, ranging in size from thin to obese. To measure body image dissatisfaction subjects had to choose images representing their current, and their ideal sizes. The difference between these is taken to be the level of dissatisfaction. To measure the range of healthy sizes subjects had to choose a minimum and a maximum figure between which all the figures where healthy. Results show no significant difference in levels of body image dissatisfaction between any of the groups, except between men and women. In the range of healthy chosen there was no significant difference between 1st and 4th year osteopaths, but there was a significant difference between osteopathic and non osteopathic students (p=0.0013 for women, p=0.0066 for men). This result was still significant when 1st year osteopaths were compared with non osteopaths, so therefore the difference does not appear to be an effect of osteopathic education, but already present at the start of the course.
