Abstract
The study investigates if some students in the fourth year at the British School of Osteopathy (BSO) are better at palpating then others and what factors influence the abilities to develop better palpatory skills.Fifty of the fourth year students participated in the experiment. The experiment was designed by the researcher in order to test quantitatively and qualitatively the variability of palpatory skills amongst the fourth year students. Factors that influenced the ability to develop better palpatory skills was also investigated. Subjects palpated breast prosthetics that contained three small objects and were then asked questions about what they felt.Statistical analysis of the results showed that 90% of students in the fourth year are classed as good palpators.Out of the three shapes that were used in the experiment, the square was found to be the easiest palpable shape by the majority of subjects. The conclusion was that within the fourth year there are better palpators than others and there are several factors that influence palpatory abilities, such as the more technique that is practised the better palpation will become.
