BackgroundTemporomandibular joint disorders collectively refer to the disorders of the temporomandibular joint and is a prevalent condition possibly linked to psychosocial factors. The aim of objective of this study was to find out the possible association between emotional stress and TMD. Method and DesignThis was a questionnaire-based study on a randomly selected hundred and ten male and female volunteers aged 18-40 years from the British College of Osteopathic Medicine. Emotional stress was assessed using the Psychological Well Being Index (PGWBI), while the incident of TMD was measured using Fonesca’s Anamnestic Index Questionnaire (FAI). Both instruments are validated tools. ResultsOut of the 110 individuals invited, a total of 50 responded, with the incident of TMD being scored for 68% of the sample size. No significant differences were observed between males and females assessed by the PGWBI, using the Chi-squared test at p=0.194. For TMD a significant difference was found between males and females for the different categories of FAI, using Chi-squared test at p=0.049. However, a significant negative correlation was observed between PGWBI and FAI for the sample using Spearman’s Rank Correlation test at p=0.05. ConclusionThe findings of this study largely support the observation that emotional stress is negatively correlated with the severity of TMD.
