Abstract
BackgroundSeveral osteopathic studies demonstrated the effects related to vascular changes such as blood flow and blood perfusion. Blood flow is associated with the state of the sympathetic nervous system, thus may be a marker of systemic microcirculation. AimThe present research was aimed to investigate the effects of suboccipital inhibition technique on cutaneous blood flow in upper and lower limbs, as well as to compare it with anatomically related C0-C1 mobilisation technique. MethodsThis single blinded, crossover study recruited 20 asymptomatic males and 11 females ranging from 18 to 40 years old, of different races. Cutaneous blood flow was measured with Laser Doppler Flowmetry (Oxford Optronix OxyFlo 2000). The measurements were done at 2 minutes prior the intervention, 2 minutes during and 5 minutes post-intervention for suboccipital inhibition, Sham, C0-C1 mobilisation and control groups. The obtained data underwent statistical analysis. ResultsNo significant difference was found between the means for time points for upper limb (542.6 ±239.66, 580.91 ± 264.62 and 537.08 ± 254.92 BFU for 2min pre, 2 min dur and 5 min post, respectively, p>0.05). No statistically significant differences were found between groups for mean CBF for lower limb (49.1 ± 4.53, 47.7 ± 4.70, 47.4 ± 4.92 and 48.3 ± 4.94, for suboccipital inhibition, Sham, C0-C1 mobilisation and control, respectively, p>0.05). ConclusionsSuboccipital inhibition does not alter mean cutaneous blood flow in upper or lower limb. The results were inconsistent with previous studies, and might have been influenced by limitations such as flaws of Laser Doppler Flowmeter as well as external stimuli potentially affecting the autonomic responses.
