- Abstract
- ObjectiveTo ascertain patients’ knowledge, awareness and perception of osteopathy in comparison to physiotherapy and chiropractic. DesignA questionnaire was designed and provided to any patient coming above the age of 18 to the British College of Osteopathic Medicine on day of consultation via direct recruitment. 31 questionnaires were completed and analysed for this research. ResultsFrom analysis of results, physiotherapy presented as most popular treatment therapy of the three, with 67% of the participants being previously treated by it. Participants revealed a limited understanding of perception of safety and suitable age ranges that osteopathy can treat, with chiropractic revealing least amount of knowledge and physiotherapy the highest. The nature of the complaint was indicated as most important factor when deciding whom to see for treatment totaling 58% of the participants. In addition, contacting their General Practitioner for referral to an osteopath was voted by majority (52%) as the best method to book an appointment with an osteopath. Contacting an osteopath was shown to be the top choice (35%) for seeking more information on osteopathy and osteopathy was the preferred method of treatment across participants (52%) if all things were equal and the complaint was assumed to be musculoskeletal. Lastly, the knowledge of the participants was relatively adequate on the perceived conditions all three manual therapies can treat. ConclusionIt can be argued that there is optimal room for osteopathy to achieve greater recognition in order to achieve all it’s potential benefits. The osteopathic profession therefore has a duty to inform the public about its benefits so that anyone can make an informed decision of whether osteopathy is the right treatment method for them or not.
