Abstract
BackgroundPatient satisfaction is an important aspect in osteopathic care giving. Patient expectations must be understood to achieve this. Research observing patients’ expectations in Osteopathic Education Institution training clinics is sparsely researched.
ObjectiveThe aim of this study is to understand the expectations of patients attending Osteopathic Education Institution training clinics in the UK and compare them to private practice and CAM studies.
MethodThe cross-sectional survey randomly sampled private patients (n~100) from Osteopathic Education Institution training clinics in the UK. This study used a modified questionnaire that contained 70 questions; 15 descriptive questions related to the patient and their symptoms, and 55 questions about patient expectations.
ResultsRelief of symptoms was the primary theme reported by patients (75%), followed by patient centred approach, education and self-management of pain, clear communication between patient and practitioner, and practitioner competency. There was a broader range of expectations in the ‘patients new to osteopathy’ group (M = 196.750 (SD +/-22.939)) than ‘experienced osteopathic patient’ group (M = 196.375 (SD +/- 9.913). There was no statistical difference between gender (p = 0.096).
DiscussionPatients appeared to hold high expectations of care in osteopathic education teaching clinics. Patients’ expectations appear to have been well met. Altogether, 100% of patients reported there were no unmet expectations, achieving a 94% satisfaction rate.
ConclusionThis study complements current literature available in private practice osteopathy and other CAM sectors. Irrespective of the stage in a physician’s career, patients expect to be provided with relief from their symptoms and to be treated with respect.
