Abstract
ObjectiveTo determine the effect of an osteopathic manipulative treatment technique (suboccipital inhibition) on heart rate and blood pressure as a measure of cardiac autonomic activity.
Methods24 healthy student subjects, 14 males and 10 females aged 18-50 years, were recruited from the British College of Osteopathic Medicine. Subjects underwent three experimental conditions administered in a random order at least 48 hours apart: osteopathic manipulative treatment, sham manipulation and time control. All experimental conditions were conducted for 5 minutes in the supine position. The osteopathic manipulative treatment consisted of suboccipital inhibition, the sham condition involved contact away from the suboccipital muscles, and the control did not involve any contact with participants. Mean heart rate and blood pressure measurements were taken pre-intervention, immediately post-intervention and 10 minutes post-intervention.
ResultsSignificant differences in mean heart rate between the suboccipital inhibition group and the control group were noted at the pre-intervention (63 ± 11 BPM vs 58 ± 11 BPM) and post-intervention time points (62 ± 10 BPM vs 58 ± 10 BPM) (P = 0.043 and P = 0.023 respectively). No other significant differences were noted between the suboccipital inhibition, sham or control groups (P > 0.05 for all variables). There were no significant differences in heart rate or blood pressure when comparing the time points within the suboccipital inhibition, sham or control groups (P > 0.05 for all variables). 3
ConclusionThese data do not support the hypothesis that suboccipital inhibition can acutely affect heart rate and blood pressure in healthy individuals.
