Abstract
ObjectiveAn analysis of data from patients under the care of the British College of Osteopathic Medicine with a diagnosis of Osteoarthritis. The aim was to see if Osteopathy and Hydrotherapy has an effect on pain levels in those with Osteoarthritic condition. Methods A total 168 patients records were analysed to see if there was a significant difference in overall pain levels recorded with a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), difference in gender VAS, and a difference in VAS for those who did or did not receive Hydrotherapy.ResultsA total of 168 patients, 118 females and 48 males, with a mean age of 66.3 (SD 12.6) years. A statistical difference was found between the pre and post treatment VAS for all of the patients. At consult the mean VAS was 5 (SD 3.06) and the post treatment VAS the mean was 2.7 (SD 2.96).There was a statistical significant difference found between females for VAS pre and post treatment. Pre-treatment mean VAS 5.1 (SD 3.1) post treatment mean VAS 2.7 (SD 2.9). Also a significance between males pre and post treatment. Pre-treatment mean VAS 4.6 (SD 2.9) post treatment mean VAS 2.6 (SD 3). However, there is no statistical significance between both genders.A statistical significant difference was found between the VAS of pre and post Hydrotherapy groups. 84 patients received Hydrotherapy the mean VAS for the pre-treatment was 4.8 (SD 3). In the post treatment for those who had the  Hydrotherapy the mean VAS was 2.4 (SD 2.6). 33 patients did not receive Hydrotherapy the mean VAS for the pre-treatment group was 4.8 (SD 3). In the post treatment group for no Hydrotherapy the mean VAS was 2.9 (SD 3.2). However, there was no difference between the no Hydrotherapy groups. Conclusion Osteopathy and Hydrotherapy techniques have been shown to reduce the levels of pain in those with Osteoarthritis.
