Abstract
Introduction and aimThe Nijmegen questionnaire is commonly used in research and clinical setting to aid in the diagnosis of hyperventilation, HVS and BPDs. Despites its popularity, the literature regarding the reliability of Nijmegen questionnaire is controversial, and that its relationship to end tidal carbon dioxide is variable. The primary aim of this study is to examine the relationship between scores on the Nijmegen questionnaire and ETCO2.MethodSixty-three subjects ,40 females and 23 males (mean age:27 (SD 7) years) were recruited from the British College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM). Subjects filled in the Nijmegen questionnaire, and were required to attended the human performance lab at BCOM for one 15-minute session. The subjects height and weight were measured. subjects were then connected to a breath analysis machine, and asked to breath normally for 5 minutes. The ETCO2, VE/L/min and B/min measurements were recorded.ResultsFor data analysis subjects were divided into three groups, and data were analysed using linear regressions and t-tests (significance was set at p<0.05). No statistically significant relationship was found between scores on the Nijmegen questionnaire and ETCO2.ConclusionThe results of this study suggest that a high score on the Nijmegen questionnaire is not indicative of HVS, and that the symptoms reported on the Nijmegen questionnaire may be due to other factors other than low ETCO2. Therefore, the Nijmegen questionnaire is unreliable for diagnosing or ruling out hypocapnia and HVS.
