Abstract
The increasing interest in osteopathy in Spain has multiplied the offers of seminars, courses and schools of uneven standards. This makes it hard for the general public to assess the training of a practitioner, since the only requirement needed to practise at present in Spain is a Diploma in Osteopathy. The aim of this study is to establish how good osteopathic academic standards are in Madrid and compare and evaluate them with those at BCOM by using the requirements of CEPLIS as a yardstick.

This was a cross-sectional design survey research using interviews to collect the data to fill out the questionnaires. These interviews were carried out among 20 osteopathic schools in the province of Madrid and BCOM.

In the first part of the survey it was found that there are only 2 (10%) schools offering the minimum number of hours required by CEPLIS, together with clinical practice.  Both these schools require the presentation of a dissertation and enjoy international recognition. The length of the courses for the different sub-groups varies from 1 to 5 years.

In the second part of the survey the sample was 2 (10%) schools from the province of Madrid (UPUERE and EOM) and BCOM. All three schools fulfil the requirements of CEPLIS as regards admission requirements, course length, number of hours required to graduate, the dissertation and international recognition. The only noteworthy difference is that EOM offers no clinical practice.
The academic standards at BCOM are higher in the number of hours required for clinical practice and the total number of hours required to graduate.

This study has emphasized the need to raise the Osteopathic academic standards in the province of Madrid. However, a further study needs to be undertaken before the results can be applied throughout Spain.
