Abstract
Musculoskeletal injuries occur frequently in connection with physical activity. The aim of this investigation was to assess if there was an increased incidence of musculoskeletal injuries in an artillery regiment due to an increased training work-load, prior to an operational tour.STUDY DESIGN. To achieve this, a retrospective case history analysis of medical records from a British Army medical practice in Woolwich, South East London was conducted. 500 case history files were analysed covering two, six month intervals i) September 1997 to February 1998 and ii) March 1998 to August 1998. The increased training workload occurred during the second six month period.RESULTS. The results obtained for the two periods indicated an equal number of incidences from each group at n = 45. The results obtained showed no significant increase in musculoskeletal injuries due to an increased training workload. The results did however identify the incidence and type of injury sustained. Lower limb injuries were most commonly seen at 60% and 78% of the presenting complaints over the two six month periods respectively. This was not a significant increase at the 95% confidence level. Knee pain and low back pain were also seen as presenting symptoms. The findings agree with previous research on military musculoskeletal injuries.CONCLUSION. There was no significant increase in incidence of musculoskeletal injuries due to the increased training workload. However, the type of injuries sustained were identified and might have some clinical relevance to osteopaths who may find themselves treating military personnel.
