- Abstract
- The purpose of this experimental and questionnaire study was to determine the relationship between isometric strength and the amount of perceived pain on certain osteopathic techniques in students during their fourth year of training at the British School of Osteopathy. 50 participants were involved, all having their right thumb measured into flexion and extension using the Jackson Evaluation System. The average of three strength measurements being recorded on a continuous scale. For stabilisation of the hand, wrist, and elbow, during the isometric strength measurements, a wooden brace was used.The statistics used for the comparison were an independent t test for the between groups data of the presence or absence of pain during the separate osteopathic techniques compared to the thumb isometric strength data. For the correlation the non-parametric Spearman's tests were used on ranked data for the level of pain and its relationship to thumb isometric strength data.It was found that the comparison of thumb strength with the technique of inhibition had significant results showing that stronger thumbs reported less or no pain as found using an independent t test. The Spearman's non-parametric correlation of pain during articulation and flexion strength and the difference between flexion and extension strengths was negative, showing that the greater the level of pain felt the weaker the strength measurement.The implications for osteopathy are for long term practitioner care with the possibility of improving flexion strength of the thumb to reduce the pain felt whilst practising. This is especially relevant during articulation and inhibition techniques.
