Abstract
The study explores the relationship between Chronic Upper Limb Pain and respiratory function. Forty computer-users were recruited from a variety of work-places and institutions and asked to complete a questionnaire concerning computer-use, upper limb symptoms, life-style and breathing. The working definition of Chronic Upper Limb Pain used is, pain experienced in the hand, wrist, fore-arm, arm or elbow for more than six months, associated with the use of a key-board, mouse or other encoder. Respiratory Function was measured using a Wright's portable peak-flow meter and a tape-measure. A variety of keyboard and mouse driven equipment was used by those taking part, including broadcast editing equipment, which has received little scrutiny to date. Five categories of computer-users were studied, including managers and administrators, typists, broadcast editors, radio producers and computer students. Volunteers ranged from nineteen to fifty five years of age. A total of twenty six women and fourteen men were included in the study. In the first instance, volunteers with upper limb symptoms were recruited and subsequently matched with colleagues of similar age, sex and occupation.A matched-pairs design was used and Spearmans Rho correlation of the data showed a significant correlation (0.665 at P-value 0.001, 95% confidence interval) between mean peak-flow and chronic upper limb pain in the whole sample population of forty. No significant correlation was found between mean thoracic expansion in centimetres and chronic upper limb pain, or between mean percentage of thoracic expansion and chronic upper limb pain.
