Abstract
An experiment was carried out at the British School of Osteopathy, to compare the use of Psychological Intervention between students with two years of clinic experience, and students who had no clinic experience. Fifty five first years and forty six fourth year students were asked to watch two short video clips, both of the same hypothetical consultation, although each with a different emotional emphasis. They were then asked to respond to twelve statements, which had been coded, to incorporate each of John Heron's Six Categories of Intervention. These results were then analysed to detect any differences between the subjects. The results showed that there was very little difference in the order of preference for the application of the categories, with all students preferring to adopt the Prescriptive and Confrontational Intentions in all emotional encounters. The least used was the Informative Intention, with fourth years using this category less then the first years. The remaining three Intentions, Cathartic, Catalytic and Supportive were varied in their application. Students with the greater amount of clinic experience seemed to have a more sophisticated appreciation of the categories and their appropriate utilisation within the Patient-Practitioner relationship. The conclusions inferred from this study can be used to reflect upon the current teaching methods of psycho social interventions at the B.S.O. and aim to provide students with a greater awareness of the tools which are available to them as health care practitioners. This will enhance the claim that Osteopathy recognises a patient as being an individual, with social, cognitive, spiritual and affective domains, and not just a collection of physical symptoms.
