Abstract
The aim of this study is to inform the debate within osteopathy concerning the management of emotions within the consultation by exploring clinical practice. Eight osteopaths qualified at least three years ago and practising in the same region of the United Kingdom were interviewed regarding the nature of emotional outbursts they encounter in their patients, the way they manage them, and their perception of the boundaries of osteopathic intervention in this domain. This research shows that the overt expression of emotions within osteopathy is almost entirely patient-led rather than practitioner-led and typically involves tears. In managing these emotional outbursts osteopaths largely resort to non-verbal techniques and where used verbal interventions are non-directive. Touch and listening prove to be the most important tools in managing the patient's emotions. Both these techniques form part of osteopathic competences, managing emotional outbursts is therefore an intrinsic part of osteopathy.
