Abstract
The analysis of plain X-Ray film can form an important part of the osteopathic evaluative procedure. The main aim of this study was to examine the ability of osteopaths to analyse plain X-Ray films and determine which clinically significant abnormalities they detect or fail to detect. A secondary minor aim was to assess what 'relevance' the results of plain film analysis have on their clinical practice.METHOD. Twenty two registered osteopaths were recruited from the British School of Osteopathy (BSO). Subjects were required to analyse a variety of plain spinal X-Ray films, identifying abnormalities. This was then compared to data obtained from imaging experts who had independently identified abnormalities on the same films, assigning each a score in terms of its clinical significance. Subjects were also asked to indicate (with regard to one set of films) what relevance the information elicited would have on clinical practice.RESULTS. Subjects were deemed to be competent if they adequately detected 50.0% of all the abnormalities present. 77.3% (n=17) of subjects failed to meet this suggested standard. Of the 22.7% (n=5) who did, no one achieved a detection rate of more than 56.0%. Overall a mean detection rate of 39.6% was achieved, with a slightly better detection rate for high significance abnormalities (40.2%) than low (37.9%). A majority of the osteopaths questioned, stated that X-Ray use did have relevance to their clinical practice.CONCLUSION. This study indicates that subjects are unable to competently analyse and detect abnormalities on a range of plain spinal X-Ray films. There is however an underlying knowledge of the subject, allowing some evaluation and appreciation of a films' content to be undertaken.
