Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of homoeopaths' awareness of osteopathy, whether homeopaths favour referring patients to osteopathy, their patient referral patterns to osteopathy, together with the most effective method of educating homoeopaths in respect of osteopathy. It also investigated whether there are certain conditions that homoeopaths perceive to benefit more from a combined homoeopathic and osteopathic treatment. The participants of the postal survey were selected at random from the Society of Homoeopaths register. The results revealed that a high proportion of homoeopaths have a good understanding and positive attitude towards osteopathy. This was reflected in the fact, that they favour referring patients for osteopathy, rather than to chiropractic or physiotherapy. Homoeopaths prefer to acquire further knowledge of osteopath via personal contact with the osteopaths in their locality. The most common reasons for referring patients to osteopathy were to achieve structural and functional change. A combined osteopathic and homoeopathic treatment was perceived to be of most benefit for structural problems, back complaints, birth traumas, arthritis and respiratory condition. This report gives an insight into homoeopaths' perception of osteopathy and the conditions that homoeopaths most regularly referred to osteopath, which would be of benefit to osteopaths establishing a practice or entering a multi-disciplinary practice.
