Abstract
Osteopathic muscle energy technique (MET) affects stretch receptors to produce post-isometric contraction of muscle. This process is considered to be mediated at spinal cord level.Psychophysiologists theorise that through the use of mental practice (MP) positive results can be obtained in skill acquisition, muscle strength and balance ability. This motor programming occurs in the higher centres of the central nervous system.The aim of this study was to use a self designed goniometer to measure the effect of both a MP exercise and a MET on reducing resting tone of the hamstring muscles.Using a randomised order controlled and repeat measure design, 54 subjects between the ages of 19-46 were measured for maximal passive hamstring stretch by a straight leg raise test. Over a 5 day period, MET and MP were administered to 2 groups a third acting as control. Significant differences were found between the two experimental groups and the control. It was found that the combination of MET and MP was more effective than MET alone (p=0391).The theories behind the physiological mechanisms explaining these findings were discussed. It was concluded that significant improvement in passive hamstring stretch highlights the potential valuable clinical application of mental practice combined with osteopathic technique.
