- The author felt that the practice of holism in an osteopathic context was important to analyse because it enhanced an effective therapeutic understanding. The study aimed to elucidate whether the essence of holism could be observed and assessed in a consultation and interview.The aim was to uncover tacit assumptions about holism within osteopathy; to explore the awareness and thought processes of practitioners, in order to gather enough interpretable information to reflect the parts of the whole picture.A sample of six osteopaths from the British School of Osteopathy were videoed and interviewed. Multiple methods of grounded theory, descriptive statistics and Interpretative of Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) were used to generate, code, categorise and analyse the extensive and illuminating data.During the analysis the transcripts generated from the videos and interviews were interpreted and segregated into patterns, themes and connections in order to find meaning and direction. These were then grouped into holistic domains.The results showed that holistic concepts do indeed exist, however their presence cannot always be seen, they are extremely difficult to interpret due to the elusive nature of holism.As osteopaths we are considered to be scientific, allopathic, alternative, reductionist and holistic. However, osteopathy maintains its unique position within these disciplines because the individual osteopath can choose which, or however many, disciplines they want to concentrate on. This process reflects the concept of holism as many parts can make a whole and vice versa.Therefore, the author felt that the domains reflected upon by the subjects within the study, supported her belief that holism is a component part of osteopathy.
