- The aim of the study was to establish to what extent patients at the British School of Osteopathy (BSO) clinic are given a meaningful prognosis. Also of interest was whether patients get re-evaluated to monitor the success of treatment and patient management. Questionnaires were given to 80 3rd and 4th year students who practice in the clinic and 40 of the clinic tutors. This was to try and establish how documentation was filled in and to understand the communication between practitioner and patient. There was also a review of 120 patient records to establish what prognostic information was recorded and how often patients were re-evaluated. The results showed that patients are often given no meaningful prognosis, records being left blank or the word 'Good' written in 58% of patient histories. Tutors expected more 3rd year students to ask for their advice when establishing a prognosis than actually did. There was little evidence of re-evaluation of patients after their prognosis time. It is recommended that the school provides more teaching on the importance of a prognosis, as 70% of students felt there was not enough emphasis in this area. A proposal is also made for a new form that should facilitate better patient re-evaluation. The concept for the new form was perceived to be a useful idea by 96% of the tutors and students questioned. These recommendations should improve patient satisfaction and patient management within the clinic. It should also prepare students particularly with private health cover and the anticipated rise of Osteopathy in the NHS, practitioners will have to justify their clinical effectiveness i.e. treatments per patient for a specific condition.
