- Abstract
- Over the past decade more and more research has been centered upon the cumulative affects of heading in football (soccer). Studies have concluded that there are possible affects to the brain in professional footballers similar to those seen in boxers.Comparatively, however, the accumulative affects placed upon the Cervical spine through heading has hardly been investigated.Acute Cervical spine injury as a result of heading a football is uncommon in the game however the presence of neck dysfunction and subsequent symptoms of a more chronic nature is an area the study aims to look into, comparing not only the presence of symptoms between professional and amateur footballers but also their perception and knowledge regarding the technique.A guided questionnaire was constructed and distributed to sixty participants. Thirty players from Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers football clubs formed the professional opinion, with thirty players from Old Vaughnions A and B sides forming the amateur.Using Chi Square and Two Sample T-Tests to analyse the data, the results highlighted the symptoms experienced between the two groups were not in general statistically different, however players’ knowledge base and education of the technique did vary significantly between the groups.The implications of the findings are of importance to the Osteopath in many ways. They incorporate diagnosis, prognosis, treatment planning and techniques used in treatment. In addition, the findings highlight the importance of the Osteopath in an advisory capacity, opening the issue of the use of a multi-disciplinary approach in the treatment of sports persons.
