- Urinary incontinence is a common visceral dysfunction that particularly affects women. The purpose of this research was to establish the current opinion of osteopaths in treating adult female patients who may be suffering from this.Two hundred osteopaths were randomly selected from the General Osteopathic Register, 1999 (G.Os.C.) and were sent postal questionnaires. The questionnaire was composed of four main sections; general information about the osteopath; their knowledge and confidence with regards to treating these patients; their treatment and referral of a hypothetical patient and the estimated number of patients they had actually treated.This research has shown that if an adult female patient presents to an osteopath primarily due to urinary incontinence, then the osteopath is generally not confident when treating them. The osteopaths are however knowledgeable on the subject and aware of the predisposing factors and anatomical relations.It would seem then, that the academic grounding is present but the application of this is, as yet, not apparent. Perhaps the emphasis of undergraduate education could be altered to promote visceral osteopathy. This combined with further research to demonstrate the efficacy and application of visceral manipulation would then hopefully promote its use and the confidence with which practitioners apply it.
