- The aim of this interview study was to find out osteopath’s views about the spiritual domain, an aspect of the holistic approach to healthcare. Specifically it set out to discover what osteopaths believe this domain represents, how they thought it relevant to their patients’ health, and if, how, and to what extent they explored the spiritual domain of their patients in clinical practice. As well as being an aspect of the holistic approach, the spiritual domain has been recognised as an important factor in health beliefs and as an independent variable affecting health. Understandings of patients’ spiritual beliefs increases empathy in the therapeutic relationship. 11 osteopaths were interviewed, and Grounded Theory used to analyse the data. The study found that osteopaths believe that the spiritual domain is an important factor in holistic healthcare but are concerned that exploration may have deleterious effects on the therapeutic relationship, and this concern discourages them from exploring the spiritual domains of their patients. Information concerning osteopaths’ approaches to exploring the spiritual domain in practice was insufficient to draw any conclusions. Reliability of the data analysis was questionable. The report concludes that the aims were only partly achieved, and recommendations include that the study be repeated on a larger scale with improved reliability.
