Abstract
Language encodes ideas and as such reflects and gauges cultural and conceptual change (Skultans: 1998). This study investigates the different usage of osteopathic terminology between fourth year students at the British College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy (BCNO), the British School of Osteopathy (BSO) and the European School of Osteopathy (ESO), with the aim of determining differences, both in the frequency of use of terms and the understanding of terms, using a questionnaire. There was a high response rate of 84% from the BCNO, 90% from the BSO and 75% from the ESO.The results showed significant differences in the osteopathic language used in the clinic environment at the different schools. They further revealed that while for some terms there was a consensus with regard to meaning, for others there were significant differences in understanding. The findings were interpreted as reflecting the different historical and conceptual developments of the schools. Current moves within the profession are to reduce isolationist tendencies, promote research to support its acceptance as evidence based medicine and to raise educational standards. In order to further these aims there is a need to develop a more consistent and coherent terminology. This might not be easy to achieve, however, as the osteopathic historical framework includes a variety of conceptual models which are verbalised in different nomenclature.
