Abstract
The aims of this study were to investigate the time structure of new patient (NP) appointments at the British School of Osteopathy (BSO) general clinic and to assess the satisfaction levels of the NP’s who attend it. It also aims to find out if the NP’s are suitably informed at the time of booking about expected appointment length and the clinic being run by students and overseen by tutors. The research involved timing various aspects of the NP appointment, including start time, case history, time the patient was left alone whilst the student is in discussion with the tutor, standing examination, passive examination and treatment and total appointment length. A questionnaire was completed by 50 subjects (42 were included in the study) retrospectively to the appointment about their satisfaction levels with the above sections and to record comments about what they liked and disliked most about the appointment. Results obtained indicated that there is a positive correlation between subjective opinion of and actual time taken over each section of the appointment. There was found to be no significant correlation between subjective opinion of and actual time taken for the total appointment, however the appointments over ran by an average of 7.3 minutes. The study concludes that patients are suitably informed about the expected appointment length, but less so about the clinic being run by students and overseen by tutors. The case history, time left alone and standing examination were subjectively reported to be too long and the treatment and tutor attendance too short. This shows the importance of good time keeping which will help to provide a good quality ser vice.
