Abstract
Twenty, healthy adult subjects, selected from within the British School of Osteopathy student body, participated in a within groups experiment to investigate the effects of researcher-selected music versus self-selected music upon passive hip flexion, (as a measure of hamstring resting muscle tone), and mood. These dependent variables were measured prior to and post-exposure to the musical stimuli. Changes in passive hip flexion were measured by supporting the supine subject’s ankle, of the dominant lower extremity, in a sling. This was attached to a pulley system, which in turn, communicated with a vertical scale behind the subject. Mood change was assessed by using a shortened version of the Profile Of Mood States questionnaire. A significant reduction in hamstring resting muscle tone was obtained when subjects listened to the researcher-selected, New Age, music. This was accompanied by significantly more positive changes in mood under the same conditions, than when subjects listened to a self-selected piece. This suggests that it may not be essential that music be matched to the individual’s mood for it to be effective. Rather, it is the qualities and components comprising the music that remain, largely, the therapeutic features. This study demonstrates the powerful, therapeutic potential of musical entrainment, which may provide an ideal environment, in which the osteopath may care for his/her patients, by reducing general sympathetic arousal, and aiding a compensatory recovery.
