- Abstract
- An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of osteopathic cross fibre soft tissue treatment to the posterior compartment of the lower leg on the proprioceptive acuity of tibio-talar joint. This was measured by the subjects ability to reproduce target angles of ankle flexion whilst lying prone on a plinth, before and after receiving the soft tissue treatment. A control group, who did not receive any treatment were also measured for comparison purposes. In addition two experimental conditions were applied to each subject, firstly ankle movement into plantar flexion and secondly ankle movement into dorsi flexion. It was predicted in our hypothesis that soft tissue treatment would improve proprioceptive acuity due to an effect on the quality of sensory feedback from the muscle to the central nervous system. It was also hoped that, based upon previous research, joint position sense into dorsi flexion would be more accurate than that into plantar flexion. However, no significance was found to support our hypothesis and possible reasons for this are addressed in the discussion. In conclusion, the study suggests that soft tissue is only a small part of a total treatment plan and when considering its value should be considered in this context.
