Abstract
This qualitative study aimed to elicit the factors which influence Primary Care Group ( PCG) member's decisions to purchase osteopathy. 15 subjects were selected at random from PCGs in London and the Southeast. The sample included representation from all professional and non-professional bodies on the PCG ( doctors, nurses, social workers and lay members). The semi-structured interview utilised was designed to extrapolate both internal and external factors influencing commissioning decisions. The results showed differences between professionals and lay members in their understanding and personal use of osteopathy. The majority of GPs had a clear understanding of the use of osteopathy while overall nurses and lay members had a limited knowledge. However all groups were unaware of the broader application of osteopathy. All subjects agreed that osteopathy should be available on the NHS, provided it is supported by appropriate research. There is the potential for development of osteopathy within the NHS but this is dependent on the education of health care professional and members of the public. It is essential therefore that further research is conducted on the effectiveness of osteopathy. Joint comparative studies, undertaken by osteopaths and orthodox practitioners, which include cost benefit analysis, are to be recommended. Additionally osteopaths need to highlight the health needs that are not been met by conventional medicine, which they can address. The onus is on osteopaths, interested in establishing contracts with the NHS, to ensure this issue is placed on the PCG board agenda. The establishment of a national centralised database of evidence based practice may also be valuable in securing the long term future of NHS funded osteopathy
