Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the correlation between leg length difference and back pain. For depth of understanding the origin and aetiology of leg length differences are discussed along with the scientific measurement of pain. A literature search was performed using medline database and selection was made, nine studies fitted the inclusion criteria and these were from medical, chiropractic, and rheumatology clinics. Systematic analysis was performed in four categories, methodology, study design, intervention and data analysis. The study group were essentially hetrogenetic therefore the nine studies were compared through the type of study undertaken. Three of the studies concluded positive outcomes and four concluded negative outcome, the remaining drew no conclusions. Systematic analysis revealed substantial methodological and data analysis errors throughout the studies reviewed. Therefore it was concluded that the correlation was unsubstantiated and further investigation through randomised trials needs to be undertaken for accurate analysis of the importance and applicability to the practising Osteopath.
