Abstract
The aims of this study were to discover:- How osteopaths classify headaches,- The criteria used to do this,- The preferred methods of treatment and management,- The headache type that benefits most from treatment,- How effective osteopaths are at treating each type of headache. To fulfil these aims semi-structured face to face interviews were undertaken with fifteen qualified osteopaths. The results showed that there was no standard method for classification of headaches within the profession. Osteopaths had an individualistic approach to classification and used their own criteria for diagnosing the different types of primary headaches. There were no preferred methods of treatment for specific types of headaches. The application of osteopathic principles accounted for this as osteopaths viewed their patients as individuals and therefore applied different techniques and treatments to every patient.Osteopaths believed that patients with tension headaches benefited most from osteopathic treatment, with migraine headache sufferers benefiting less from osteopathic treatment. There was a higher referral rate of patients with this type of headache to other health care professionals.Osteopaths do not use the IHS standard nomenclature used by other primary health care professionals which has implications for patient care and communication with other primary health care professionals. There is a lack of knowledge within the profession about the criteria which could be rectified by universities and colleges teaching about the topic.
