- Abstract
- The aim of this study is to ascertain whether osteopathic treatment can help people with autism. The specific objectives of the study are to investigate the aims of treatment and how outcomes of treatment are measured. The study is based on a review of previous research and interviews with 12 osteopaths who have experience of treating people with autism. From the study it may be concluded that there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that osteopathy has a role to play in the treatment of people with autism. However, due to most respondents not using a recognized autism assessment tool to measure outcomes, there is no substantive evidence to support their findings. In order for osteopathy to develop its role in the treatment of people with autism, it is suggested that a recognized autism assessment tool is considered as a model of good practice. This would provide a basis for further research into treatment outcomes in this field.
