- There were two aims to this study. The first was to see whether muscle energy technique (MET) or soft tissue massage (STM) could be used to increase a persons hand span. The second was to compare the effectiveness of the two techniques at increasing hand span. The MET used was Post Isometric Relaxation.60 subjects were randomly placed into 3 groups of 20; Control (no treatment given) , STM and MET. The subjects were selected from 3rd and 4th year students at the British School of Osteopathy between the ages of 20 and 40. An equal number of male and female patients were placed in each group.Hand span was measured before and after 3 minutes of treatment, using a mathematical compass and measuring ruler. Normality tests showed that the data was of normal distribution. This was followed by unrelated t tests.Both techniques produced a significant (p0.05).The results imply that both STM and MET are able to create an immediate increase in hand span but that one is not more effective than the other. This could be a useful finding to those practitioners using these techniques and those interested in treating the hand.
