- Abstract
- The aims of this study were to establish the views that osteopaths had with regards the treatment of animals. In addition the general views the veterinary body had i.e. The Royal College of Veterinary surgeons (RCVS ) and the governing Osteopathic body i.e. The General Council of Register of Osteopaths with regards the treatment of animals, were ascertained. Two hundred questionnaires were sent out randomly to osteopaths within Britain. 140 questionnaires were returned of which 120 could be used in the study. The data was then analysed appropriately and conclusions were drawn up, based on the collected data. The respondents were in general of the opinion that osteopathy seemed to have a valid role to play within the veterinary world. Although there is a lack of undergraduate training in this field, it was viewed that animal osteopathic training should be per-sued at a post graduate level. The main reasons why osteopaths treated animals was client request, while the main reason they refused to treat an animal was a lack of knowledge. It was the view of both professions governing bodies that the treatment of animals should only occur with the appropriate referral from a veterinary surgeon.
