Abstract
The study investigates what osteopathic, chiropractic and physiotherapy students, studying in the UK, believe to be the most important factors in successful treatment outcome. Differences between the groups were explored. A questionnaire was developed, piloted, and sent to 312 students. The overall response rate was 54% (169). The findings indicated that the majority of respondents believed the practitioner-patient relationship and the patients’ own motivation and resources were more important than the practitioners’ skills and knowledge for successful treatment outcomes. The majority of subjects endorsed a holistic view of healthcare with no significant difference elicited between men and women. The view of osteopathy, chiropractic and physiotherapy as caring professions as opposed to a biomedical science prevailed. There were no significant differences between the student groups.Indications are offered for future research to explore if unique qualities of the three groups exist. An alternative model of respect, autonomy and teamwork is suggested as a way forward for future research to develop a framework of evidence for the efficacy of manual therapy as a whole in primary health care provision
