Abstract
Introduction: In clinical situations where there is considered to be a deficit of proprioception (e.g. the functionally unstable ankle) it is a common practice to prescribe proprioception/co-ordination exercises with the aim of improving function and reducing the likelihood of injury recurrence. The intention of this study is to measure the reliability of evidence, from published research, that indicates any significant benefit derived from such an intervention.Method: A computer-aided literature search was performed for relevant articles. The methodology of each article selected was then assessed according to four main checklist groupings (study population, interventions, measurement of effect, and data presentation). Each study was ‘scored’ according to these criteria by two separate individuals (the author and a colleague). Results: Only two studies scored more than 50 points (maximum available 100 points) being 55 points and 51 points respectively. This suggests that most of the selected research was of poor methodological quality. The highest scoring study was inconclusive as to the benefit of such interventions. Conclusions: From the studies reviewed there is no conclusive evidence supporting the use of their respective interventions in the clinical environment on the basis of improving proprioception. This is because of their poor methodological quality. Suggestions are made for future research to improve methodological quality and thereby allow more definitive conclusions to be made as to the benefits of such an intervention.
